가난한 전직 대학생 라스콜니코프는 ‘비범한 인간은 도덕을 넘어설 수 있다’는 자신의 이론을 시험하듯 전당포 노파를 살해한다. 그러나 완전범죄의 자신감은 곧 죄책감과 양심의 고통으로 무너지고, 예심판사 포르피리와의 팽팽한 심리전, 그리고 창녀 소냐의 헌신적 사랑 속에서 그는 마침내 자백과 구원의 가능성을 향해 나아간다.

A destitute ex-student, Raskolnikov, murders a pawnbroker to test his theory that extraordinary men stand above morality—only to be crushed by guilt and conscience. Through a cat-and-mouse duel with the magistrate Porfiry and the devoted love of Sonya, he is driven at last toward confession and the possibility of redemption.
